How Can HOAs Improve Air Quality in Their Communities?

America has been at the forefront of global carbon dioxide emissions since the Second Industrial Revolution in 1965. The US per capita emissions are also among the highest in the world. And people recognize that. So much so, 73% of Americans have indicated support for transit-oriented development in their communities which would help them reduce their carbon footprint and improve the air quality. If you are on the board of a homeowners association (HOA), you must already be deliberating the ways to do that.

The first step here would be to make the residents aware of the air quality index on a regular basis. Poor air quality has been known to aggravate health issues and affect lung capacity. Conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are directly linked to the quality of the air we breathe. Therefore, checking the local air quality index regularly is a must for any community.

Moreover, residents not only need to be made aware of air quality action days, they can also be encouraged to use public transport or take zero-emission vehicles for their transit requirements. As a board member of an HOA, you can encourage your neighbors to adopt electric vehicles (EV).

Chances are, many of your neighbors may already be considering EVs as their next car of choice, but putting their plans on hold because of lack of charging infrastructure. Therefore, as an HOA board member, you can make the biggest impact by encouraging the installation of EV charging stations on the premises. On one hand, this would not make adopting and using EVs more feasible for your neighbors, and on the other, the resale value of the property will also increase.
